How does Call Blocker work?

trueCall Call Blocker is really easy to set up – you just plug it in between your phone and the wall socket.

If an untrusted number calls you, trueCall intercepts the call and plays the caller a message. For example:

“Hello – we don’t accept marketing calls. If you are a friend, family member or invited caller, please press ‘1’. If you are a cold caller, please hang up and don’t call again.”

It then puts the caller on hold and rings your phone. When you pick up, trueCall announces who the caller is, and you can choose whether to accept the call, reject the call (and block all future calls from that number), or send the caller to the built-in answering machine.

By doing this, you will be creating a list of trusted numbers, and a list of numbers to block.

In trials, 98% of telemarketers hung up when they heard this message and, of course, automated and silent calls can’t get through.

It doesn’t end there - you can optionally manage and control your trueCall unit online through your personal Internet Control Panel (see example here).

This allows you to view a log of all your incoming and outgoing calls, and easily edit your trusted callers list.

You can also choose to blacklist all calls from abroad, for example, or all ‘withheld numbers’.

Q: How easy is trueCall Blocker to set up?

A: trueCall Call Blocker is easy to set up – you just plug it in and it quickly learns who you like to speak to and who you don’t. If the standard call handling profile doesn’t quite meet your needs there are four others to choose from, and you can even fully customise your own unique Profile to give you the greatest flexibility and control.

You can choose how you want each type of call to be handled - International calls, calls from businesses, calls from mobile phone, etc.  You can choose to send the caller directly to trueCall’s built-in voicemail, play them the unobtainable tone, ask them to enter a code to get through to you, or just let them hear the ringing tone (while your phone is silent!). What’s more, you can choose different call handling rules for daytime and night-time.

For example, if you are receiving calls from international call centres you can get trueCall to ask all international callers to enter a two digit code – this stops the call centres, but allows your friends and family who live abroad to get through. 

It doesn’t end there - you can optionally manage and control your trueCall unit online through your personal Internet Control Panel. View a log of all your incoming and outgoing calls, edit your trusted callers list and change your configuration settings. Online access is free for the first year then £20 pa. With the optional Call Recorder memory card you can record incoming and outgoing phone calls and play them back on your PC.

Get it!

This was bought for my home. I had no real worries, but we were getting a lot of nuisance phone calls with the occasional aggressive/obnoxious sales person or scammer. It means that only a genuine caller will take the time to get through trueCall vetting process. I like that I can tailor the settings online. This makes it more user friendly than trying to programme the device. It really works. I would definitely tell others to get it!

Useful and practical

Very good . Got it because of nuisance calls , pi insurance claim chasers, boiler quotes , new window sales, surveys etc . Also unit is a very good answering machine , beats any of the commercial phone units, . Clear instructions on receiving messages . Friends appreciate it well . Only comment is record of all callers only accessible by going to website . Older people might not be able to do so unless computer literate friend / relation available

Great package and friendly service

One of the best answering machines we have ever had . So user friendly . Would be even better if it would automatically link to the website to update and add to the stored numbers etc. Very clear instructions when some one rings in and certainly no time waster. A good service too

Great gadget that does a great job

Peace at last from telemarketing pests and scammers. Since installing the only calls I receive are the ones I want. The pests haven't given up but I don't even know they have called unless I check the stats on the web site but as I am not interested why bother.

Highly recommended

This is the business!! Attached to phone line and no more nuisance calls straight away. On the default setting, calls are screened straight away. Friends and family have to state there name which allows the call to go through which you can take or drop. After 2 days of blocked call bliss my wife joked, "This is great, i almost feel like Billy No Mates!" Already Zapped several nuisance callers and permanently blocked them from future calls. Which I had got this much much sooner. Highly recommended.

I was very impressed with the trueCall system. Although it is aimed at people who are visually impaired, it can support and protect any vulnerable person who lives on their own.


What I liked about the device

  • It allows the user to fully control and manage all landline calls like no other system: identifying numbers you would like to talk to; blocking numbers and people you wish to avoid speaking to. Other callers will be screened efficiently, allowing the user to make a decision before the line is connected. Settings can be changed for night-time screening.
  • Once you set it up, trueCall is very intuitive and can be managed and accessed in three ways: using available pre-setting options; during a call using two buttons (* and #); via the web portal through your phone call history. The manual is available in audio CD and large print, if required. Ongoing managing of calls can be done by a carer or relative via the web portal, if the user is unable to.
  • If you have a memory card, you can record calls and access the information later. This can also be accessed by your carers and relatives, if your memory is not as it used to be.
     

Things to watch out for

  • Initial setting requires access to a computer and remembering step sequence or retention of large amounts of information during setup.
  • The serial number providing the code to access the set-up menu from your handset is on a small sticker at the back of the device. The number is printed in Braille on the device. However, if you have a visual impairment you will struggle to read the numbers without a magnifying glass.
  • Non-battery operated device.
     

Design/ease of use

The device is small and looks smart. There is only one main button on the front of the device. You are encouraged to use your phone handset to access the settings and control your calls. I was impressed by how intuitive the operating system is and the way it communicates and supports the user. The design eliminates the need to rely on your vision, making it very user friendly for people with visual impairment/ blindness, however the support it provides can be of value for people with physical impairment and people in early stages of dementia.


Functions available

trueCall Vi is designed for people with visual impairment:

  • trueCall Vi interface is via voice menus rather than through a screen.
  • When you call back messages the control is via your familiar phone handset.
  • trueCall announces the caller using their name rather than a long number.
  • You can record phone calls and so you don’t have to worry about taking notes during the call.
  • Manual is available in large print and audio CD.
  • Serial number is printed in Braille on the back on of the unit.
     

trueCall Vi offers ten possible ways that incoming calls can be managed:

  • Accepting the call if the number is on your 'Star list' (happy to accept the call)
  • Asking the caller to say their name (Whisper) when the number is not indicated as blocked or accepted, so trueCall Vi can announce the call using their name rather than a number.
  • Block with a 'Zap' message - "Please don’t call again"
  • Ask caller to leave a message.
  • Blocking with anonymous caller message.
  • Asking the caller to press a button (Shield) useful for blocking recorded messages.


Value for money

There are other devices available for blocking unwanted calls. Some are slightly cheaper than the trueCall, however no other offers such flexible, easy-to-control and manage systems. All other devices rely of the user vision for use.

I believe the trueCall Vi is affordable and good value for money for the service it provides.
