Kardia Mobile ECG by AliveCor®

Description

Now you can automatically detect potentially serious heart arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation, using the Kardia Mobile ECG by AliveCor® with your smartphone...

-          Takes just 30 seconds to find out whether you have an abnormal heart rhythm

-          Small enough to fit in the palm of your hand so you can easily take ECG recordings on-the-go

-          Your data is automatically stored in the app so that you can share it with your doctor to quickly make treatment decisions together

How does the Kardia Mobile ECG benefit you?

Whether you have a heart rhythm disorder, or you’re just health-savvy and want to keep on top of your heart health, the Kardia Mobile ECG is a great way for you to manage your heart health…

-          Heart rhythm and pulse rate at your fingertips – anytime, anywhere

-          Use voice memos to keep track of palpitations, shortness of breath, dietary habits and exercise patterns– so you can match any trends between your activity, your rhythm and your pulse

-          Small and discreet with a handy attachment plate that sticks to your phone, so it won’t be accidentally misplaced

How does it work?

Open the Kardia app and press the ‘Record Now’ button. Either place your fingers onto the metal plates, or place the plates against your chest and it will automatically start measuring your heart rhythm.

After 30 seconds, your results will instantly appear on the screen, telling you what your pulse rate is and whether your heart rhythm is normal or not.

The app will store all of your readings and you can even add in any information that may have affected your pulse and rhythm...

Like if you've had caffeine, or have recently exercised.

So, you have all the information you need to take to your doctor or cardiologist, automatically stored in the app.

What is the Kardia app?

Automatically store your ECG readings in the app for free, so there’s no need for keeping a manual record. You will have all of your data at your fingertips, using the in-app journal.

Alternatively, you can sign up to their premium subscription for added benefits…

Premium Subscription

-          Unlimited storage and history so you can track your heart health over time to detect changes, such as AF, that could lead to stroke

-          ECG, heart rate and key modifiable risk factors for stroke (blood pressure, activity, weight)

-          Monthly reports that you can share with your doctor with all the information needed for better care

Every purchase of Kardia Mobile comes with a free 30-day Premium subscription trial, which you can choose to continue for £9.99 per month (this is done through the app, once your free trial has ended).

How will this help your doctor?

With the app, you can give your doctor greater access to your data to understand the cause of your symptoms and other abnormalities, such as atrial fibrillation (AF) episodes, and make the right treatment decisions together.

In fact, some doctors are now even recommending the Kardia to their patients.

FAQs

Q: I have a question that's not answered below. What should I do?

A: If you have a question, please click here to get in touch. We'll be happy to answer any queries you may have.

Q: How do I attach the heart monitor to my phone?

A: The device comes with an attachment plate with single-use adhesive that can be used to attach the monitor directly to your mobile device, or preferred mobile device case. If you need a replacement attachment plate please email us at [email protected].

Q: Is the AliveCor® Heart Monitor accurate?

A: In clinical studies, the AliveCor® Heart Monitor has been shown to be accurate. The Heart Monitor is cleared for use by the US regulatory body, the FDA, and as such has shown equivalency to other ECG machines.

Two studies were recently published in peer reviewed journals that further document the accuracy of the Heart Monitor. They are as follows: J.K. Lau et al., 'iPhone ECG application for community screening to detect silent atrial fibrillation: A novel technology to prevent stroke.', International Journal of Cardiology, Vol 165:193-194, 2013.

Q: Is my data safe?

A: The ECG rhythm data you collect using your AliveCor® Heart Monitor is stored in two places: in the AliveECG app on the mobile device and on AliveCor's secure, encrypted US and EU servers (accessible by you, your familiy and anyone else you want to grant access to e.g. your GP, from the web on AliveCor®'s secure web app).

Q: Will this work on my tablet or other smartphones?

A: Currently the Heart Monitor itself has been validated for a variety of Apple and Android smartphones and tablets. The AliveCor® Heart Monitor is cleared for use with the Samsung S3/S4/S5, Samsung Note 3, HTC One, iPod Touch 5G, iPhone 4/4s, iPhone 5/5s, iPhone 6/6 Plus, iPhone 7, iPad Air and iPad Mini.

You must also download the free AliveCor® app. Visit the Apple App Store on your iPhone or the Android Google Play Store to download the AliveCor® app for free.

Q: How does the AliveCor® attach to my phone?

A: The device comes with an attachment plate with single-use adhesive that can be used to attach the monitor directly to your mobile device, or preferred mobile device case.

Q: It appears I have not received the attachment plate in the box, what should I do?

A: Although the box lists two separate items that should be included: the AliveCor® Heart Monitor and the attachment plate, please be aware that the AliveCor® Heart Monitor comes already placed within the attachment plate. If you need to remove the AliveCor® Heart Monitor from the attachment plate, you should be able to do this by sliding it out. If you still have items of your order missing, please give us a call on 0800 246 1939, or email us at [email protected] and we will resolve your issue.

Q: Your part number is AC-009UE-DI but on the Alivecor® website it appears as AC-009-UA-DI, are they the same product?

A: Yes they are! As an authorised Alivecor® partner, Alivecor® allocate a unique product code to us, but they are one and the same product.

Q: What is the minimum detectable ECG amplitude?

A: The AliveCor has a 5 microvolt Least Significant Bit which means that is the measurement limit.

Very useful

I suffered from palpitations and it was difficult to track down the cause. My doctor was happy with the PDF if produced. It did the job and was a lot cheaper than to have had private ECG monitoring for a week which may still not have found the cause (an occurrence has to happen whilst you are being monitored). It gives great reassurance- I was anxious about what was going on. I’ve been promoting it to my friends and family!

Very happy with it

My partner and I use the Kardia. We are very happy with it. My partner is a GP and has atrial fibrillation. It’s great that the Kardia is NICE-approved, which means that doctors have to pay attention to it.

Review by Michael, Cheltenham

Easy to use

I have both AF and tachycardia so the Kardia produces readings that I can give to my doctor. The Kardia is easy to use and compact- I keep it in my wallet. The doctors are really impressed with it.

Recommended by my heart surgeon

The Kardia was recommended by my heart surgeon. I used to cycle and had episodes of high heart rate. I emailed the Kardia’s data to my doctor who confirmed that I have Atrial Fibrillation and I am now on medication to control it. The data now allows my doctor to increase or reduce the dose as my condition changes.

Review by Peter, Manchester

Highly recommended

Have to say, I'm very impressed with this little gizmo. The fact that I used it to capture an episode of AF on the first night I had it means, in my view, it's already paid for itself. I have been able to record half a dozen episodes now (sadly) and have emailed the ECG in PDF format to my GP. She was quite impressed too! It is so easy to carry with you and simple to set up. There are cheaper alternatives out there, but for me this is worth its weight in gold. Highly recommended.

The expert's opinion

Expert rating 5

This latest generation of AliveCor® Heart Monitor is fantastically easy to use and offers medical grade testing at unbeatable value for money.

What I liked about the device
  • It’s incredibly easy to use – simply download the free app onto your smartphone (it now works with iPhone 4 onwards and the major Android smartphone models e.g. Samsung) – hold the device with both hands near your phone and it starts taking an ECG trace. No Bluetooth pairing or other setup required – it is probably the easiest setup I’ve ever seen.
  • Although you may never have used a heart monitor before, AliveCor® have built a lot of intelligence into their app to make the results useful. So for example, there’s automatic AF (atrial fibrillation) detection built in – this is incredibly important as AF is a major risk factor in strokes. They’re also adding new features all the time, such as a forthcoming update that will tell you if there is nothing to worry about. These updates all come via the app so you don’t need to replace the device.
  • A cardio physiologist I know has tried the device and felt it was very accurate – as AliveCor®’s own tests demonstrate and as supported by the US regulatory body, the FDA, who have approved it.

Things to watch out for

  • Work out which version of the AliveCor® you want to go for – you can either choose one that clips nicely on the back of your iPhone 5 or iPhone 6, or you can go for a universal one that works with iPhones, iPads and Android phones. This one uses a self-adhesive holder – I attached mine to the rubber case I use with my Samsung S4.
  • Also be aware that you don’t actually need to attach the AliveCor® to your phone or iPad at all – it works by sending very high frequency sound waves. So as long as you hold the device near the microphone it works – I tested this myself. This means you can use the same AliveCor® unit with multiple phones and tablet devices if you want.
  • It doesn’t have an on/off switch – simply holding the AliveCor® with the app set to ‘record’ mode turns it on.

Design/ease of use

The device is surprisingly small and neat in design. When I attached it to my phone case it was hardly noticeable.  AliveCor® have done a lot of work in perfecting and minimising the design in this version which is now their third generation. It is also incredibly easy to use, working straight out of the box.  They’ve also thought about battery life which is one of the common issues with connected health devices. This simply uses a small coin shaped battery, which should last a year in normal use, and will be cheap to replace, simply swap another one in

Functions available

The AliveCor® Heart Monitor is designed for anyone who wants to proactively assess and manage their heart health:

  • Works with Samsung S3/S4/S5, Samsung Note 3, HTC One, iPod Touch 5G, iPhone 4/4s, iPhone 5/5s, iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, iPad Air and iPad Mini.
  • Results can be downloaded as a PDF or emailed (for example if you wanted to share with your doctor)
  • You can also send your results off to a cardio physiologist service for professional interpretation (extra charge).
  • The AliveCor® has been approved for use in Europe (CE mark) and the United States (FDA regulatory approval), and has been used in clinical trials to prove its effectiveness.
