trueCall Secure Nuisance Call Blocker for Dementia

Are you worried about a vulnerable relative being hassled by nuisance callers?

Vulnerable adults are often targeted by scammers who want to cruelly trick them into giving away money or sensitive personal information.

And cold calls can often result in significant anxiety and confusion, which is a particularly serious problem for those living with conditions such as dementia.

Naturally, this will be a major concern for you. So, put an end to your worries with the trueCall Secure Call Blocker…

How does trueCall Secure benefit your loved one?

With trueCall, you know that they won’t be hassled by intrusive cold callers, giving you both the peace of mind that you deserve…

  • Their phone line will no longer be permanently engaged because of unwanted callers who refuse to hang up
  • You both have peace of mind that only the people they want to speak to are able to ring
  • Get the peace and quiet they deserve – they no longer have to worry about being unnecessarily interrupted in the middle of something, which can be really frustrating
  • They don’t have to deal with the anxiety or confusion of talking to strangers. The constant threat of unwanted calls, and the difficulty of dealing with them, can be highly distressing
  • Unnecessary outgoing calls are blocked, so they’re not at risk of racking up high phone bills

How can you protect them from nuisance calls?

Whether they are confused by telemarketing calls, agree to order products they don’t need, or are taken advantage of by dishonest sales people and scammers…

trueCall Secure stops these callers in their tracks.

It’s really easy to set up – you just plug it in between your phone and the wall socket.

If an untrusted number calls you, trueCall intercepts the call and plays the caller a message. For example:

“Hello – we don’t accept marketing calls. If you are a friend, family member or invited caller, please press ‘1’. If you are a cold caller, please hang up and don’t call again.”

It then puts the caller on hold and rings your phone. When you pick up, trueCall announces who the caller is, and you can choose whether to accept the call, reject the call (and block all future calls from that number), or send the caller to the built-in answering machine.

By doing this, you will be creating a list of trusted numbers, and a list of numbers to block.

In trials, 98% of telemarketers hung up when they heard this message and, of course, automated and silent calls can’t get through.

It doesn’t end there - you can optionally manage and control your trueCall unit online through your personal Internet Control Panel (see example here).

This allows you to view a log of all their incoming and outgoing calls, and easily edit their trusted callers list.

You can also choose to blacklist all calls from abroad, for example, or all ‘withheld numbers’.

What is the trueCall Secure dementia setting?

  • ‘Trusted callers only’ setting, allows all of your loved one’s trusted callers through and blocks all other callers with a personalised message, for your peace of mind
  • trueCall Secure also has a special feature with an outgoing call block - when your relative dials one of the barred numbers they will just hear an unobtainable tone, so you know they’re not speaking to people they shouldn’t be or running up high phone bills

It doesn’t end there - you can optionally manage and control your loved one’s trueCall unit online through your personal Internet Control Panel.

This allows you to view a log of all the incoming and outgoing calls, edit their trusted callers list and change their configuration settings.

Q: I have a question that's not answered below. What should I do?

A: If you have a question, please click here to get in touch. We'll be happy to answer any queries you may have.

Q: Does trueCall Secure offer any protection for those suffering from dementia?

A: If you want even more protection trueCall Secure has a dementia setting called ‘Trusted callers only’. Trusted callers get through, but all other callers are blocked with your personalised message, for example:-

“Hello - Mary is only accepting calls from friends and family members. If your call is important, please call her son Bob on 07752 XXX XXX or enter your code now.”

Telemarketers and scammers are blocked, but legitimate callers will ring Bob. This guarantees that whenever Mary’s phone rings it will be a trusted caller. Mary uses her phone as normal, and forgets that trueCall Secure is protecting her.

Q: What else can I do with trueCall Secure?

A: See list below:

  • Personalise the greetings
  • Easy to install – just plug it in between the phone and phone socket
  • Compatible with pendant alarm systems
  • Up to 1,000 numbers on your Trusted Caller list
  • Use the existing corded or cordless phone
  • You can go onto the Internet from your home or work to view the call log and make changes to the trusted callers list and other settings. Online access is free for the first year then £25 pa
  • Uses the caller-ID service from the telephone network
  • Multi award winning design from the UK

Q: Does trueCall care have any Special features?

A: See list below:

  • Outgoing call block – Some people suffering from dementia dial the same phone number repeatedly. They may call the speaking clock, a doctor’s surgery, or a member of the family. This can run up high phone bills and be a nuisance to the people who receive the calls. trueCall Secure's outgoing call barring feature allows you to block calls to certain phone numbers (or number ranges). When your relative dials one of the barred numbers they will just hear an unobtainable tone.
  • Off Hook warning - Sometimes, people will leave their phone off the hook either by knocking the phone handset out of its cradle, or by pressing the wrong button on a cordless phone handset. This makes their line engaged and leaves them uncontactable. trueCall Secure has an off-hook warning feature. If the phone has been taken off the hook and no number has been dialled within 30 seconds the announcement “One of your telephone handsets is off hook - please replace it” is repeatedly played through the speaker until the handset is replaced.
  • Call recording - Telephone conversations can be recorded if you buy the optional trueCall Call Recorder memory card. Call recordings are useful to clear up misunderstandings, identify mis-selling and record cases of financial abuse.

 Q. Can trueCall Secure work on the same phone line as an alarm unit like the Possum or Tynetec alarm units?

A. The trueCall Secure has been used successfully with Possum and Tynetec alarms (which in effect are a type of telephone in their own right) so this is quite normal. The recommendation would be to connect the alarm to the phone line first then attach the trueCall unit - this ensures that safety calls to/from the alarm unit cannot be blocked.

Made such a difference to my elderly mother

This is a fantastic bit of kit. It has made such a difference to my elderly mother's wellbeing, and peace of mind to me. It ensures she receives all the nice calls from friends and family and removes the hitherto persistent sales calls which caused her great upset and a constant fear of picking up the phone. I hate to think what her (and my!) state of mind would be now, if it were not for this system. I think everybody should have one!

It's allowed my mum to stay in her own home

I do believe that the trueCall Secure has been an important factor in allowing my mum to stay in her own home for longer. It is such a simple, easy to use device.

My mother was getting so distressed before

My mother has dementia and had been getting confused and distressed with all the nuisance calls she was receiving even though she was registered with the TPS. This has had an effect on her confidence and she felt vulnerable in her own home. I cannot tell you the difference that trueCall has made to her quality of independent living.

My mother's demeanor improved immediately

I bought a trueCall unit and my mother's demeanor improved immediately; she returned to her happy cheerful talkative self and from that point on we have enjoyed a year of harassment free living.

Was initially skeptical, but it's great!

Amazing product! I was quite skeptical that it would stop the numerous cold callers (specifically from India) that my mother was receiving daily. However, overnight they have gone from around 5 a day to none (touch wood!) I would definitely recommend True Call for someone of any age to control the frequency of cold callers.

The expert's opinion

Expert rating 4

I was very impressed with the trueCall system. Although it is aimed at people who are visually impaired, it can support and protect any vulnerable person who lives on their own.

What I liked about the device

  • It allows the user to fully control and manage all landline calls like no other system: identifying numbers you would like to talk to; blocking numbers and people you wish to avoid speaking to. Other callers will be screened efficiently, allowing the user to make a decision before the line is connected. Settings can be changed for night-time screening.
  • Once you set it up, trueCall is very intuitive and can be managed and accessed in three ways: using available pre-setting options; during a call using two buttons (* and #); via the web portal through your phone call history. The manual is available in audio CD and large print, if required. Ongoing managing of calls can be done by a carer or relative via the web portal, if the user is unable to.
  • If you have a memory card, you can record calls and access the information later. This can also be accessed by your carers and relatives, if your memory is not as it used to be.

Things to watch out for

  • Initial setting requires access to a computer and remembering step sequence or retention of large amounts of information during setup.
  • The serial number providing the code to access the set-up menu from your handset is on a small sticker at the back of the device. The number is printed in Braille on the device. However, if you have a visual impairment you will struggle to read the numbers without a magnifying glass.
  • Non-battery operated device.

Design/ease of use

The device is small and looks smart. There is only one main button on the front of the device. You are encouraged to use your phone handset to access the settings and control your calls. I was impressed by how intuitive the operating system is and the way it communicates and supports the user. The design eliminates the need to rely on your vision, making it very user friendly for people with visual impairment/ blindness, however the support it provides can be of value for people with physical impairment and people in early stages of dementia.

Functions available

trueCall Vi is designed for people with visual impairment:

  • trueCall Vi interface is via voice menus rather than through a screen.
  • When you call back messages the control is via your familiar phone handset.
  • trueCall announces the caller using their name rather than a long number.
  • You can record phone calls and so you don’t have to worry about taking notes during the call.
  • Manual is available in large print and audio CD.
  • Serial number is printed in Braille on the back on of the unit.

trueCall Vi offers ten possible ways that incoming calls can be managed:

  • Accepting the call if the number is on your 'Star list' (happy to accept the call)
  • Asking the caller to say their name (Whisper) when the number is not indicated as blocked or accepted, so trueCall Vi can announce the call using their name rather than a number.
  • Block with a 'Zap' message - "Please don’t call again"
  • Ask caller to leave a message.
  • Blocking with anonymous caller message.
  • Asking the caller to press a button (Shield) useful for blocking recorded messages.

Value for money

There are other devices available for blocking unwanted calls. Some are slightly cheaper than the trueCall, however no other offers such flexible, easy-to-control and manage systems. All other devices rely of the user vision for use.

I believe the trueCall Vi is affordable and good value for money for the service it provides.
