Tynetec Wireless Chair Sensor

Description

The Tynetec chair mat and sensor controller is designed to detect if someone gets out of their chair and doesn't return within a pre-defined time.

Upon realising that the person has not returned to the chair, the sensor controller sends a wireless signal to a Tynetec Reach Alarm Unit, which then makes an automated call to a list of carers or to a professional monitoring centre to alert them of the situation.

The Tynetec Wireless Chair Sensor should be positioned under the seat cushion and monitoring periods should then be set on the Sensor Controller.

Please note this product is designed to be used with the Tynetec Reach Alarm Unit, Reach Plus Alarm Unit and Reach Plus GSM Alarm Unit which are sold separately. No monthly service charge is required once you have purchased your equipment.

Reviews
The expert's opinion

By Clive Noak

Director, Protelhealth Limited

Expert rating 4

The Tynetec Wireless Chair Sensor must be used with a Tynetec Reach Alarm (sold separately).

The below expert review is for the Tynetec Reach Plus Alarm.

This is a very well thought-out and designed product that will appeal to all customers in need of generating an alert/alarm to be received by someone else, e.g. family member, friend, carer or monitoring centre (or a mixture of all these persons).

What’s in the box

  • Reach Plus Alarm Unit
  • Mains cable (Power Lead)
  • Telephone connection cable (Telecom lead)
  • Stand + Screw
  • Connector Cover
  • Touch Pendant
  • Touch Pendant Wearing Kit
  • User and Installation Guide

What we liked about the device

  • Unlike many such devices, it would sit comfortably in a home without drawing attention to itself or targeting its user as being someone vulnerable, e.g. the acceptability of the fashionable pendant design.
  • The inclusion of the pendant within the kit and its associated “wearing kit”.
  • The comprehensive and easy-to-use “User & Installation Guide”.
  • The very positive feedback from the installers as to how easy the product is to install, its robustness and acceptance by end users.

Things to watch out for

  • Need to be careful that wires are not trapped by the securing screw when attaching the Connector Cover or Stand.
  • There are no trouble-shooting instructions within the “User & Installation Guide”.
  • The importance of effective Broadband Filters, if broadband is available within the home.

Design/ease of use

All aspects of the product are well presented in effective, sturdy packaging, with everything except the screw for attaching the Stand being easy to find (this is hidden in plain sight, being safely secured within the plastic moulding of the packaging).

The “User & Installation Guide” is really well designed with the DIY person in mind, as it is colour coded with the parts of the product, e.g. the mains cable connection has a blue dot on it that lines up with the blue colour on the alarm/receiving unit, which is described in the “User & Installation Guide” in the same colour.

Although it would be best to have this unit installed by a professional installer, especially if it is to be linked to a monitoring centre, without any prior experience I did have it set up and generating alerts to my mobile phone within 15 minutes. Therefore, the device is easy to install and intuitive; especially as once connected to the mains it tells you what you are doing wrong.

John has installed many of these devices himself and trained many others to do this and has always been impressed by the quality of the materials and their durability.

Functions available

The range of functions available of the Reach Plus Unit, as outlined in the product description, which are in addition to those of the more basic Reach Unit, i.e:

  • Horizontal, vertical and wall-mounted installation options
  • Stand with cable management
  • Intruder alarm capability
  • Away mode
  • Large, illuminated call button
  • Memory for up to 32 sensors
  • Illuminated function buttons
  • Speakerphone mode
  • Front panel LED light showing the unit's status
  • 5 volume levels
  • Low battery reporting
  • Voice reassurance messages – these can be recorded by family members or carers
  • 12 or 24 hour monitoring mode

These functions make this a very impressive offering and one that is very scalable according to the needs of the individual, e.g. ability to accommodate up to 32 sensors.

During my attempts at installation, I was encouraged by the fact that I triggered a number of the built in alerts, such as the telephone line failure alert and the mains supply failure alert, which confirmed to me that they both work and are really annoying until you do something about them!

From the installers perspective, John had nothing but praise regarding the functional ability of the product, its reliability and general ease of use. The only criticism he had received from users was that the lights on the front of the device, that alert if there is a problem or highlight the red communication button, can at times be too bright at night and are not dimmable, although they can be programmed to be switched off.

Value for money

At its current price of £187.97 (excluding VAT) and a 24 month warranty, this product represents tremendous value for money (£0.26 per day over 24 months), especially as it is expected to last much longer than two years.

Installation would be an extra cost, but one highly recommended if a monitoring centre and or additional sensors are to be incorporated.
